Seminar #106
CHILD-CENTERED PLAY THERAPY
Instructor: Harry Allen M.A.
Sunday July 11, 2010 - 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Credits 6.0

Child-Centered Play Therapy has been shown from over 50 years of experience and research to be a very effective approach for helping children. The skills of CCPT are useful when conducting other types of play therapy as well. In CCPT, the therapist creates a nonjudgmental atmosphere with clear boundaries in which children can feel safe to express their feelings, identities and struggles. The therapeutic environment also facilitates children’s development of mastery, coping and problem-solving skills. This course covers the rationale, skills, methods and applications of CCPT. The workshop will include videos, skills training and discussions of the wide applicability of CCPT, including its use in a short-term format.  Identification and understanding of play themes are also covered.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the underlying principals of Child-Centered Play Therapy
2. Identify basic skills used by therapist in Child-Centered Play Therapy
3. Know how to use empathic listening and limit-setting (at a basic level)
4. Describe different levels of interpretation of children’s play
5. Describe why it’s important to consider developmental and contextual considerations when thinking about play themes
