EVIDENCE-BASED PLAY THERAPY

In this era of
accountability, consumers and third party players are seeking therapeutic
interventions that are evidence-based. In this seminar Dr. Schaefer will
review the substantial body of research studies that support the effectiveness
of play-based interventions with youth. Empirically-supported play therapy
for a variety of specific childhood and adolescent disorders will be
highlighted. the first day will focus on internalizing disorders,
including adjustment disorders, fears & phobias, separation anxiety, and
post-traumatic stress disorder. Externalizing Disorders, e.g., aggressive,
oppositional, and hyperactive behaviors, and Developmental Disorders, e.g.,
autism, will be covered on the second day. Prescriptive Play Therapy, an
evidence-based model that tailors the therapy to the individual's presenting
problem will also be discussed.
INSTRUCTOR: Charles E. Schaefer, Ph.D., RPT-S is founder and co-director of the Play
Therapy Training Institute and co-founder of the International
Association for Play Therapy. Among his 35 books are: Therapeutic Use of
Childs Play; Handbooks of Play Therapy, Game Play; Play Diagnosis and Assessment;
Therapeutic Powers of Play, Play Therapy Techniques; Play Therapy in Action; and The
Quotable Play Therapist. Dr. Schaefer is Professor of Psychology at Fairleigh
Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ.
