PLAY THERAPY FOR ATTENTION - DEFICIT - HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

This two-day seminar will focus on working with children who have Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder and their families.  Participants will explore the behavior and interaction patterns of children with ADHD.  They will learn how to adapt Play Therapy strategies to work with ADHD clients.  The first part of this seminar will focus on assessment, psychopharmacology and treatment for children with ADHD.  Videotaped footage of actual Play Therapy sessions will be shown to illustrate specific techniques.  The second day will focus on group treatment of children, social skills training, and self-control training.  Participants will also learn how to teach parents to discipline more appropriately and successfully, to interact more positively with their children and to communicate more effectively with school personnel.

Course Objectives

List core symptoms of Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and two behavioral components of each

Understand the therapeutic powers of play that are involved in the treatment of ADHD children

Learn how to use limit setting play therapy to help children with ADHD

List at least three qualifications of the ideal play therapist for children with ADHD

Understand the key component of the parent training of these families

Know how play therapy treatment can help these  children in general

INSTRUCTOR: Heidi Kaduson, Ph.D., RPT-S is a licensed clinical psychologist and registered play therapist-supervisor.  She is in private practice in Monroe Twp.,  New Jersey.   She has lectured throughout the world on the assessment and treatment of Attention
- Deficit - Hyperactivity Disorder and Play Therapy. She has conducted research studies on the effectiveness of diverse treatment approaches for this childhood disorder.  Dr. Kaduson is co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute and past president/ board member of the Association for Play Therapy.  She is author and co-editor of books entitled The Playing Cure, 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, The Quotable Play Therapist, and Short-Term Play Therapy For Children.
