PLAY THERAPY WITH PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

This workshop will focus on the different play therapy methods to use with preschool children. Many of these children have difficulties that cannot be expressed in words. The workshop will cover the areas of child development (both cognitive and social) that relate to this population, as well as the play therapy treatment for children with disabilities and typically developed children. There will be some experiential work, as well as videos to enhance the didactic presentation.

Course Objectives

Have a basic knowledge of Piaget's stages of development as it relates to preschoolers

Understand the limitations of preschool thought

Compare normal play to play therapy for children with disorders

Elicit help from parents for preschoolers with biochemical differences

List several themes of preschool play

INSTRUCTOR: Heidi Kaduson, Ph.D., RPT-S is a licensed clinical psychologist and registered play therapist-supervisor.  She is in private practice in Monroe Twp.,  New Jersey.   She has lectured throughout the world on the assessment and treatment of Attention - Deficit - Hyperactivity Disorder and Play Therapy. She has conducted research studies on the effectiveness of diverse treatment approaches for this childhood disorder.  Dr. Kaduson is director of the Play Therapy Training Institute and past president/ board member of the Association for Play Therapy.  She is author and co-editor of books entitled The Playing Cure, 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, The Quotable Play Therapist, and Short-Term Play Therapy For Children.
