THERAPEUTIC ENGAGEMENT OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN PLAY THERAPY

This workshop will focus on techniques with adolescents that can be adapted for use in groups or family therapy as well. The strategies are designed to create meaningful moments in the therapy process to facilitate strengthening of the therapeutic alliance and emotional engagement that has the potential for healing and transformative changes. The techniques will include drawing, storytelling, play, and symbol variations. These strategies will be described and illustrated with clinical examples. In addition, experiential exercises centered on difficult challenges in engaging resistant adolescents will be interspersed throughout the day.

INSTRUCTOR: David A. Crenshaw, Ph.D., ABPP, RPT-S is Founder of the Rhinebeck Child and Family Center, LLC in Rhinebeck, NY. He is the co-author with John B. Mordock of two books: A Handbook of Play Therapy with Aggressive Children and Understanding and Treating the Aggression of Children: Fawns in Gorilla Suits. Dr. Crenshaw is also the author of Evocative Strategies in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy and Therapeutic Engagement with Children and Adolescents: Play, Symbol, Drawing, and Storytelling Strategies.
