This workshop will focus on the different types of play therapy approaches used with children on the autistic spectrum, including pervasive developmental disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. Some background will be covered regarding children with these disorders. The main focus will be on play therapy techniques and case studies which illustrate how to connect with these children, how to teach symbolic play so that they can heal themselves regarding psychological difficulties, teach them socially appropriate ways of functioning, and help them to fit in the mainstream of school. Case examples will be illustrated by video presentation.

- Learn the various other types of disorders that may be seen in the PDD spectrum.
- Learn how to use a play to help the child communicate his/her difficulties.
- Participants will learn how to use a combination of non-directive and directive approaches to help build social skills.
- Participants will review the characteristics and abilities of children with PDD, and learn how to modify the play therapy for each individual.
