SEMINAR # 235 PLAY THERAPY FOR CHILDREN WITH MOOD DISORDERS Instructor: Heidi Kaduson, Ph.D., RPT-S
In this presentation, therapists will learn how to deliver successful, research-based play therapy intervention strategies for children with mood disordered, including depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder. At every stage of development (toddlers, preschoolers, elementary school children, and adolescents), assessment and play therapy techniques will be discussed. The key elements of cognition and coping strategies will also be described at each stage of development. Recent advances in the fields of child development, pharmacology, play, and manualized treatments will be presented. Course Objectives Understand children's developmental capacities at various stages across childhood and adolescence Understand the biological underpinnings of common childhood mood and anxiety disorders Understand the cognitive and biological significance of play to alter childhood pathology Attain diagnostic accuracy of common childhood mood disorders Understand the developmental factors that impact children's symptoms, learning, and response to treatment Use a number of state-of-the-art techniques to treat common childhood disorders INSTRUCTOR: Heidi Kaduson, Ph.D., RPT-S is a licensed clinical psychologist and registered play therapist-supervisor. She is in private practice in Monroe Twp., New Jersey. She has lectured throughout the world on the assessment and treatment of Attention - Deficit - Hyperactivity Disorder and Play Therapy. She has conducted research studies on the effectiveness of diverse treatment approaches for this childhood disorder. Dr. Kaduson is co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute and past president/board member of the Association for Play Therapy. She is author and co-editor of books entitled The Playing Cure, 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, The Quotable Play Therapist, and Short-Term Play Therapy For Children.
