PLAY THERAPY GOES TO SCHOOL (WORKING WITH CHILDREN
IN SCHOOL SETTINGS)

Working with children
in a school setting can be difficult for professionals due to many
limitations. However, play therapy is still the treatment of choice due to
the many therapeutic factors of play. This workshop will explore the
different types of play therapy that work within the school environment,
as well as working with the teachers and staff to help the behavioral
issues that also occur. This workshop will provide different nondirective
and directive methods to use for various types of disorders and different
types of children. There will be didactic presentation along with
experiential techniques. DVD’s will also be used to illustrate how play
therapy can be used in the schools.
Learning
Objectives:
1. How to use play therapy in a school setting (either classroom or therapist’s room or office
2. Learn techniques that help in the assessment of a child through play therapy
3. How to use the 30 minute interval to give a child both time to explore difficulties and close down before returning to class
4. Use play therapy in the classroom to teach social skills
5. Explore interventions that can be used by teachers or staff to deal with behavioral issues
INSTRUCTOR:
Heidi Kaduson, Ph.D., RPT-S is a licensed clinical psychologist and
registered play therapist-supervisor. She is in private practice
in Monroe
Twp., New Jersey.
She has lectured throughout the world on the assessment and
treatment of Attention
- Deficit - Hyperactivity Disorder and Play Therapy. She has conducted
research studies on
the effectiveness of diverse treatment approaches for this childhood
disorder. Dr.
Kaduson is co-director of the Play Therapy Training Institute and past
president/ board
member of the Association for Play Therapy. She is author and
co-editor of books
entitled The Playing Cure, 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques,
101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, The
Quotable Play Therapist, and Short-Term Play Therapy For Children.
