PIRATES, POWER & PLAY: AGGRESSION & VIOLENCE IN PLAY THERAPY

Course Description

In this experiential workshop, play therapists explore some of the more controversial and challenging practice issues of today, focusing on aggression and violence in play therapy.  Presentation of clinical/research considerations will be followed by videos, discussion, role plays, and activities to clarify therapeutic decision-making.

Course Objectives

1. Describe the controversies surrounding aggressive play in play 
therapy.
2. Evaluate their own comfort levels with aggression in the play room.
3. Describe the key research about aggressive play and aggression in 
play therapy.
4. Know when and how to set effective limits when working with 
aggressive behaviors.
5. Draw accurate conclusions about aggressive play themes, as well as 
aggression research.

INSTRUCTOR: Risė VanFleet, Ph.D., RPT-S, is a licensed psychologist and is the founder and Director of the Family Enhancement and Play Therapy Center, a clinic and training center located in Boiling Springs, PA.  She is Past President/Board Chair of the Association for Play Therapy and is the author of Filial Therapy: Strengthening Parent-Child Relationships through Play, A Parent’s Handbook for Filial Play Therapy, and coeditor of Casebook of Filial Therapy.
