Course Description
Children are at great risk for emotional, sexual and physical abuse by parents or guardians who use alcohol or other substances. Many have called it the silent trauma. Many children become vulnerable to assuming the role of the family scapegoat and are frequently blamed for the substance user’s behaviors. This workshop will review the literature and research in this field, and how play therapy is the natural medium to treat children who struggle with this existence. Participants will learn how to manage the family system while allowing the therapeutic powers of play help the child work through the problems associated with being a child of an addicted parent. Techniques will be used to facilitate treatment, as well as child-centered approaches to allow the child begin healing.

-Define the differences among addictions.
-Understand how the secret is a part of the play therapy.
-Know how to use the therapeutic powers of play to facilitate treatment
-Use the psychodynamic theory with play therapy for children
-Learn some techniques to help children express themselves through play.
-Identify the benefits of play therapy with this population
