Play Therapy traces its origins to psychoanalytic theory. This seminar presents an overview of concepts underlying Psychoanalytic Play Therapy and the value of these ideas in contemporary practice. Focus will be on: conducting a psychodynamic assessment; using the initial play sessions to develop a working alliance and a dynamic understanding of the child; working with transference, countertransference and resistance; adapting interventions at various stages of treatment; and termination. The diverse roles and ego functions, which the therapist provides and ways to elicit parent involvement will be discussed. Clinical case material will be used to illustrate the concepts discussed and a description of play materials for working within this paradigm will be provided. This is a Core Course.
