Basic child development has major implications for effective play therapy. For each of three age levels, 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12-year-olds, those aspects of development most relevant to play therapy will be described and the specific implications of each for play therapy will be elaborated. Major shifts in language and cognitive abilities in such areas as reasoning, memory, problem-solving and intellectual skills occur across the three age groups. In addition, children’s age specific responses to such events as death, divorce, abuse, illness, family violence and trauma will be examined for their implications in play therapy. Charts specifying the major developments for each age group and their implications for play therapy will be provided.

- Explain the therapeutic powers of play and how each stage of development allows for them to work.
- Describe the social, emotional, cognitive and other developmental stages and how to assess.
- Identify some play therapy techniques to help children express themselves through play.

Dr. Heidi Gerard Kaduson is a licensed clinical child psychologist in New York and New Jersey. She received her Ph.D. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She specializes in the evaluation and intervention services for children with a variety of behavioral, emotional and learning problems. She is obtaining her masters in Psychopharmacology for Prescribing Psychologists.
Dr. Kaduson uses play therapy for individual counseling, group psychotherapy, and social skills training. She has lectured throughout the world on Play Therapy, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and Learning Disabilities. She has trained and/or supervised thousands of individuals around the world. Dr. Kaduson is Past-President and a past-Member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for Play Therapy, as well as the Director of The Play Therapy Training Institute, Inc.
Dr. Kaduson is editor and author of many books: The Quotable Play Therapist; The Playing Cure; and 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, 101 More Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, 101 Favorite Play Therapy Techniques, Vol. III, Short Term Play Therapy, Game Play Therapy, Short Term Play Therapy, Second Edition, Contemporary Play Therapy, and Foundations of Play Therapy, Second Edition, Short Term Play Therapy, Third Edition as well as Prescriptive Play Therapy.
