Description:
This workshop aims to familiarize participants with art as it relates to the Play Therapist and is presented from a prescriptive framework. A brief introduction of Art Therapy and the two main approaches: Art as Therapy and Art Psychotherapy, will be provided. Using Charles Schaefer and Athena Drewes’ Therapeutic Powers of Play as a point of connection, participants will learn how the therapeutic change agents of play are applicable to the art making process. Additionally, art materials and the potential responses they can elicit will be discussed. Interpretation of art by the play therapist is never encouraged, however, there are some characteristics in art that when observed can provide clues to the therapeutic needs of the client. Some of these characteristics will be discussed and examples provided. A general overview of the Do’s and Don’ts of Art in the Playroom will also be provided to aid clinicians in navigating the use of art materials successfully. Specific art techniques that can be employed in the playroom will be presented and participants will engage in experientials.
Learning Objectives:
